It has quickly become clear that the coronavirus is unlike anything society has faced in modern times. There is a lot of uncertainty and fear right now about the unknown, but what we do know is this: the coronavirus is highly contagious, it can be passed before a person that doesn’t exhibit symptoms, and it is here in northeast Ohio. No one knows right now how many people have been infected because of the lack of available testing. We do know that the best defense is social distancing and an increased focus on hygiene.
Governor DeWine today announced that all restaurant and bar dining rooms are to be closed effective tonight at 9:00. This may sound extreme. However, Ohio has emerged as a leader in how to respond to this viral threat. These decisions are based on sound science and the advice of the leading minds in medicine and epidemiology. The coronavirus spreads in situations where people are in close contact with one another.
There are very real costs to a decision like this. It is important to remember this affects more than our social lives. It has a very real and adverse effect on many people’s finances. This afternoon we sent a newsletter out to our Bent Ladder family and friends saying we had made the decision to go to a “carryout only” model. We are a small business that relies on our patrons for our livelihood. We know this will gravely affect us, but we also know it is the right thing to do. We feel a responsibility to do what’s best for our community. Gov. DeWine’s announcement confirmed what we already concluded for ourselves. All of us need to do our part to “flatten the curve” and prevent the coronavirus from overwhelming our healthcare systems.
Starting Thursday, March 19, we will be open for carryout only. We will not be pouring any glasses or samples and our indoor seating will be closed to decrease contact as much as possible. We will also be adjusting our hours. New hours are Thursday through Saturday from 11am to 7pm and Sunday from 11am to 5pm.
The coronavirus looks like it will have serious economic and social impacts on everyone. Many of us are already feeling them. As we all adjust to new ways of shopping and more time at home, we want to do our part to help. Going forward, we are reducing the price on all bottles of wine to $9.99. We are also increasing our “case discount” to 15% off with the purchase of six bottles or more. We know this is not a lot, but it’s something.
The most current information on the coronavirus can be found at the Centers for Disease Control’s website and the Ohio Department of Health’s coronavirus site. The weeks ahead are vitally important in curbing this pandemic. We firmly believe that by working together and watching out for one another, we will get through this. Thank you for your continued support.
Stay safe (and wash your hands),
Your Bent Ladder Family
