Frontenac is a product of research and cross-breeding at the University of Minnesota between Landot 4511 and an extremely cold-hardy selection of Vitis riparia. It is known as a “grower friendly” variety that survives harsh winters and is fairly disease resistant. Frontenac is used to produce a variety of wine styles such as dry oaked reds, light rosés, sweeter fruit-forward reds, and ports.
Our Frontenac was grown at Katotawa Farms in northern Ashland County under our supervision. It is a sweeter style of red with characteristic varietal traits such as a dark garnet color, cherry aromas, and flavors of black currant, plum and cocoa nibs.
